lintel, in architecture, the horizontal member that spans an opening, such as a door or window, or that connects two columns. The post-and-lintel, or trabeated, system of construction, with spans limited to the length of available wood or stone beams, is the basis of the Egyptian and Greek styles of architecture, as contrasted with the later arched and vaulted, or arcuated, styles.

No references found | The origins of the name `Stonehenge' may lie in the resemblance of the lintelled sarsens to early types of gallows (Chippindale 1994: 20). To the left of the sign, look into the woods to see a lintelled entrance, perhaps to a root cellar. Archaeological opinion is divided as to whether these concentric circles of timber posts were roofed or simply lintelled (see Musson 1971; Parker Pearson 1993: [ILLUSTRATION FOR FIGURE 58 OMITTED]; Gibson 1994) but the large diameter of the timber circle recently detected by magnetometry at Stanton Drew in Somerset precludes the likelihood of roofing. |
