Local Color
in painting, the basic and unchanging color of depicted objects; it is unmodified by the effects of lighting, atmosphere, or reflections from surrounding objects. The concept of local color was first discussed by Leonardo da Vinci in his Treatise on Painting. Its use is characteristic of medieval, Early Renaissance, and classicist painting. Rejected by the impressionists, the use of local color was revived by many 20th-century schools of art (for example, expressionism). Want to thank TFD for its existence?
