(computer science)
A simple logical property that determines the type of characters which a particular code represents; for example, the first two bits can tell whether a character is numeric or alphabetic.

It's not worth going into all the reasons why this tribute (if that's what it was supposed to be) was an unmitigated disaster, although it should be said that the whole point about Orwell was that he dealt in crystalline narrative and logical construction, and that trying to convey the beauty of his work by reducing it to soundbites - an art form he would have scorned - is about as ridiculous as trying to convey the Himalayas by handing out a couple of rocks and a handful of snow.
