RAF bosses have backed the rejuvenation programme by suspending low-level bombing exercises to allow timber to be re moved.
That's because on the night before D-Day he was a crew member on a Halifax bomber that left Middleton St George with other planes from 428 Squadron of Royal Canadian Air Force for low-level bombing of a heavy gun battery at Merville which covered the entrance to Caen and the Sword beachhead.
His final mission, a low-level bombing run, ended near An Loc, 60 miles north of Saigon.
