lunar excursion module [′lü·nər ik¦skər·zhən ¦maj·ül]
(aerospace engineering)
A manned spacecraft designed to be carried on top of the Apollo service module and having its own power plant for making a manned landing on the moon and a return from the moon to the orbiting Apollo spacecraft. Abbreviated LEM. Also known as lunar module (LM).

He was also instrumental in the design and development of the Attitude Control System of the Apollo 11 Lunar Excursion Module.
The accomplishment required nearly a decade of research and experimentation by NASA as it worked to overcome one technical challenge after another: the ability to dock two ships together in space, the design of the Lunar Excursion Module, and the inherent difficulties of manned space travel.
Carbon-reinforced composites were also used on window frames and exterior panels for NASA's later Apollo space capsules, as well as positioning brackets for the lunar excursion module.
