lycopodium [‚lī·kə′pōd·ē·əm]
(materials) A yellow powder prepared from the spores ofLycopodium clavatum; used as a desiccant and absorbent. Lycopodium a genus of evergreen herbaceous plants of the family Lycopodiaceae. The numerous spikelets are apical and dense. They consist of an axis with spirally arranged sporophylls, on the upper side of which are the sporangia. The subulate leaves are on unflattened branches. There are approximately ten species, distributed primarily in the forest zone of the northern hemisphere. The spores are used by the pharmaceutical industry and in foundry work.
