the direction in which a compass needle points, at an angle (the declination) from the direction of true (geographic) north

magnetic north [mag′nedĀ·ik ′nȯrth]
(geophysics)
At any point on the earth's surface, the horizontal direction of the earth's magnetic lines of force (direction of a magnetic meridian) toward the north magnetic pole; a particular direction indicated by the needle of a magnetic compass.
