magnetic shift register [mag′ned·ik ′shift ‚rej·ə·stər]

(computer science)

A shift register in which the pattern of settings of a row of magnetic cores is shifted one step along the row by each new input pulse; diodes in the coupling loops between cores prevent backward flow of information.
