magnetic storageA medium for holding information (data, voice, video, etc.), such as tape and disk. The medium can be erased and reused over and over again. In the digital world, information is recorded by writing tiny spots (bits) of negative or positive polarity on tapes and disks. A read/write head discharges electrical impulses onto the moving ferromagnetic surface. Reading is accomplished by sensing the polarity of the bit with the read/write head. magnetic storage [mag′ned·ik ′stȯr·ij] (computer science) A device utilizing magnetic properties of materials to store data; may be roughly divided into two categories, moving (drum, disk, tape) and static (core, thin film). Also known as magnetic memory. How to thank TFD for its existence? Tell a friend about us, add a link to this page, add the site to iGoogle, or visit webmaster's page for free fun content. |

| Capable of packing 100 times more data into a given area than a compact disk and 300 times more bits than a conventional magnetic storage medium, this technique shows promise as a viable alternative for high-density data storage. The information is stored on the integrated high-capacity magnetic storage medium, resulting in a completely secure portable server that allows individuals and organizations to transact and safely exchange information wherever and whenever it is needed. Two recent examples include US6162532: Magnetic storage medium formed of nanoparticles (issued in 2000) and US6358813: Method for Increasing the Capacitance of a Semiconductor Capacitor (issued in 2002). |
