manito (măn`ĭtō), name used among Native Americans of the Algonquian-Wakashan linguistic stock to describe the supernatural power that permeates all things (see animism animism, belief in personalized, supernatural beings (or souls) that often inhabit ordinary animals and objects, governing their existence.
