Mantis Prawn

(Squilla mantis), a species of crustacean of the order Stomatopoda. Its appearance resembles that of the praying mantis. The mantis prawn reaches a length of 20 cm. It is encountered in the Mediterranean Sea, where it lives in burrows on the bottom. A predator, the mantis prawn catches its prey (crustaceans and mollusks) with a highly developed second pair of thoracic legs. It has commercial value. A closely related species, S. desmarestii, is found in the English Channel and the North Sea.
