marriage certificate

a certificate issued on the registration of a couple's marriage. First issued in 1837 in England and Wales, it shows the full name of each marriage partner, their ages, occupations and addresses, and the names and occupations of their fathers. Marriage certificates not only provide the sociologist with a source of data with which to examine marriage patterns, but also enable matters such as occupational mobility to be examined.
