mechanic's rule [mi′kan·iks ¦rül]

(mathematics)

A rule for estimating the square root of a numberxwhereby an estimateeis made of √(x), a new estimate is made by taking the quantitye′= (1/2)[e+ (x/e)], and this procedure is repeated as many times as required to achieve the desired accuracy.
