thermohaline circulation: see ocean ocean, interconnected mass of saltwater covering 70.78% of the surface of the earth, often called the world ocean. It is subdivided into four (or five) major units that are separated from each other in most cases by the continental masses. See also oceanography.

The data was presented by scientist Martinez-Mendez, in her PhD thesis titled "Surface and Deep Circulation off South Africa: Agulhas Leakage Influence on the Meridional Overturning Circulation During the Last 345 kyr".
Nevertheless, the same study reviewing these results claims "Patterns of freshwater accumulation observed in the Nordic Seas suggest a century timescale (italics mine) to reach freshening thresholds critical to that portion of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (see the article by Ruth Curry and Cecilie Mauritzen in the June 17, 2005, issue of Science).
The conveyor, technically known as the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC), carries warm shallow water into northern latitudes and returns cold deep water southwards across the equator.
