Scientists know what forms a mesocyclone, but they are largely lost when it comes to understanding which ones will spawn tornadoes and how violent they will be.
The same process that creates a mesocyclone in a tornadic thunderstorm also creates a volcanic mesocyclone in a strong volcanic plume, according to Chakraborty.
Within it, the cold and warm air currents counteract and form an air column that spins, the mesocyclone ; this at times may result in a wall cloud that is a sure sign of an upcoming tornado.
