Mesohippus [¦me·zō′hip·əs]
(paleontology) An early ancestor of the modern horse; occurred during the Oligocene. Mesohippus a genus of extinct animals of the family Equidae. They were the size of a wolf and had three toes, all of which reached the ground. The molars had a low crown. Mesohippus lived in forests and fed mainly on soft vegetation.
