The mew is about 50 cm long and weighs about 0.5 kg. The plumage is white below and bluish above; the tips of the wings are black and white. The bill is pale yellow. The bird is found in northern Europe, Asia, and North America. It is present year-round throughout the USSR except in the south, where it is found only in winter. The mew settles along rivers, lakes, and seas. It nests in colonies. A clutch contains two or three eggs, which are incubated for 25 or 26 days.
