1. a spineless globe-shaped cactus, Lophophora williamsii, of Mexico and the southwestern US Its button-like tubercles (mescal buttons) contain mescaline and are chewed by certain Indian tribes for their hallucinogenic effects
2. a colourless alcoholic spirit distilled from the fermented juice of certain agave plants

More than 700 brands of mezcal are available in Mexico, but they reside at one end of the spectrum or the other, between fearsome, tear-inducing home-brews and eye-opening artisan triumphs.
Though tequila and mezcal are both distilled twice, mezcal is fermented underground where it takes on a smoky quality; tequila is fermented in vats above ground and maintains its crisp agave flavor.
Worm: Traditionally, worms are included in mezcal, an unregulated alcoholic beverage also distilled from the agave, as a marketing gimmick.
