microprism [′mī·krə‚priz·əm]
(optics)
A usually circular area in the focusing screen of a camera viewfinder that is made up of tiny prisms and causes the image in the viewfinder to blur if the subject is out of focus.

The split field prisms and microprisms of the focusing screen often go black because of the small maximum aperture and narrow angle included.
The alternative strip uses glass beads instead of the microprisms and is less efficient.
