In the late 90s, the role of this middle tier underwent important changes due to the incursion of the Web: application servers emerged as the central platform, to which clients and databases provided specific interaction and support. A secondary or middle tier can be less expensive disk, optical, or even fast tape, while tertiary storage is usually tape or optical. VAR is a core component of Versant's e-business platform allowing data cached in the middle tier to be replicated for performance and reliability. |
