Ultrasonography revealed a large tumor in the left liver lobe (diameter of 16 cm) with ultrasonic characteristics of a mixed tumor with hyperechoic and hypoechoic islets and expansion into adjacent tissue.
The differential diagnosis is centered on tumors whose histologic characteristics are similar, such as mucoepidermoid carcinoma, sebaceous cell carcinoma, acinic cell carcinoma, mixed tumor, and metastatic renal cell carcinoma.
Transitional or mixed tumors are characterized by a whirling pattern of somewhat spindly elements, and they often contain psammoma bodies.
