Four species capable of handling a fair amount of shade are planted under mature trees at the Getty: India hawthorn (Rhaphiolepis), mock orange (Pittosporum Tobira), star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides), and Asian jasmine (Trachelospermum asiaticum).
The spearlike burgundy foliage of certain New Zealand flax (Phormium) varieties combines well with the shimmering green globes of dwarf mock orange (Pittosporum Tobira 'Wheeleri'), the blue fingers (Senecio mandraliscae) ground cover, or the yellow and green variegated 'Old Gold' spindle tree (Euonymous).
Society garlic, mock orange, privet bush, Hall's honeysuckle and junipers add greenery and color to an otherwise austere campus of gray asphalt and portable buildings.
