Modus Vivendi

a diplomatic term for a temporary or preliminary agreement that will be later supplanted by a more permanent or more detailed agreement. The document establishing a modus vivendi does not necessarily bear this designation but may represent a regular agreement or even a convention signed by both sides. More frequently, a modus vivendi is established through an exchange of notes.
