In a monopulse radar, the antenna has four multiple beams. The four antenna signals are combined in the beam former to give a signal corresponding to the sum i.e., A + B + C + D, vertical difference beam, i.e., (A + D) − (B + C) and a horizontal difference beam, (A + B) − (C + D). The sum beam and vertical difference beam patterns are shown above. When these sum and differences are compared in the processor shown above, both the amount of target movement off the antenna boresight and its sense, that is up and down, can be found. This is simultaneously sensed in the horizontal plane and the results used to drive the antenna onto the target direction.
A radar technique using four overlapping pencil beams. Two of these are for azimuth, while the other two are for elevation. The overall circuitry is such that when the target is in the center, there is no current flowing in the system.
