| Botulinum toxin type A injected into the skeletal muscle belly prevents the release of acetylcholine from the presynaptic axon of the motor endplate and blocks signal transmission at the neuromuscular junction. Also, the status of the motor endplate for EMG recording was evaluated by train-of-four stimulation of the left posterior tibial nerve, with recording from the left abductor hallucis muscle (figure, B). Recovery of impulse transmission occurs gradually as new nerve terminals grow and contact is made with the post-synaptic motor endplate. |
