MUD(MultiUser Dungeon, MultiUser Dimension, MultiUser Dialogue) Interactive games played by several people at a time on the Internet. Originally dungeons and dragon games with demons, elves and magicians, MUDs have been created for science fiction themes, cartoon characters and other types of games. | She points out that in MUDs (Multiuser dungeons, based on the role-playing game "Dungeons and Dragons"; Bruckman, 1996), characters may not be of any fixed gender, but may evolve, mutate, or morph over time at the whim of their creator. Hormel's ham-based meat product (and a memorable Monty Python skit) aside, Templeton's and others' research suggests its use originated in the game-playing sites known as MUDs (for "multi-user dungeons"), where it applied to several different types of abusive behavior. In September 2002, the Wall Street Journal ran a cover story comparing oil companies' environmental practices in Sakhalin with their practices in Alaska, stating examples in which foreign firms working in Russia were not doing everything they could or should when it came to protecting endangered Pacific gray whales, properly disposing of a drilling byproduct known as drilling muds or conserving fragile salmon habitats. |
