blunt-nosed, tropical and temperate water fishes of the family Mugilidae, found worldwide. Small schools of mullets frequent shallow waters, feeding on aquatic plants and on mud, which is ground up in the gizzardlike stomach. The striped mullet, or flathead gray mullet, Mugil cephalus, is quite common, a bluish fish that attains a weight of 1 lb (0.45 kg). Mullets are good food fish, prized for their flesh and roe, and are preyed upon heavily by larger carnivorous fishes. The red mullets, or surmullets, are unrelated species of the family Mullidae. Mullets are classified in the phylum ChordataChordata
, phylum of animals having a notochord, or dorsal stiffening rod, as the chief internal skeletal support at some stage of their development. Most chordates are vertebrates (animals with backbones), but the phylum also includes some small marine invertebrate animals.

THEY might have gone out of fashion with leg-warmers and Betamax videos but there are plenty of celebs who have worn their mullets with pride.
Striped mullet are considered isochronal spawning fishes (Greeley et al.
This study had three purposes: 1) to determine at what size and age striped mullet become fully sexually differentiated and to describe the morphological characteristics of sexual differentiation in both male and female striped mullet; 2) to determine the size and age at first maturity for each sex; and 3) to describe the timing and process of gametogenesis in relation to size and age in both males and females in order to provide a histological baseline for the evaluation and reproductive staging of striped mullet.

The primary fishery in most of these states is for "roe" mullet during the fall spawning migration.
