(1) A network switch that not only handles data, but adequately supports the real-time transmission of voice and video.

(2) A network device that supports multiple switching and routing protocols. For example, Marconi's BXR-48000 switch-router is an IP router, MPLS switch and ATM switch that can support all three protocols simultaneously.
