multistage rocket [′məl·tē‚stāj ′räk·ət]
(aerospace engineering)
A vehicle having two or more rocket units, each unit firing after the one in back of it has exhausted its propellant; normally, each unit, or stage, is jettisoned after completing its firing. Also known as multiple-stage rocket; step rocket.
