| Their argument appears clearly justified after unexpected cases of myopericarditis occurred during recent campaigns of smallpox vaccinations in the United States (2). The INCELL vaccine alternative follows the mid-April decision by Acambis (Cambridge, UK) to discontinue volunteer recruitment in clinical trials for its stockpiled ACAM2000 product due to unacceptable clinical side effects and safety concerns for the ACAM2000 vaccine and Wyeth's Dryvax vaccine, which have been implicated in heart problems, including chest pains and myopericarditis. The outbreak occurred within the same period that adverse events of myopericarditis were being reported after smallpox vaccinations among military and healthcare personnel in the United States, including Illinois (12); however, no patients in this outbreak had recently been vaccinated against smallpox. |
