In the 1950s, the government released a disease called Myxomatosis, which killed 90 percent of the animals it infected--an ideal solution until the rabbits recovered and developed a resistance. In Australia and Central America, certain species of snakes prey exclusively on amphibians and are likely to suffer significant population declines, in the same way that the red fox population was drastically reduced in the United Kingdom after the introduction of myxomatosis (10). Although quite successful at first, myxomatosis gradually became less effective, particularly in the country's dry rangelands. |
