(neer -sÿd) The hemisphere of the Moon that is permanently turned toward the Earth because of the tidal synchronization of the lunar day and the sidereal month. The lunar librations allow the terrestrial observer also to see 9% of the farside, the hemisphere that is permanently turned away from the Earth. The farside was first photographed by the Soviet Luna 3 in 1959; it has no major maria.
