negative feedback [′neg·əd·iv ′fēd‚bak] (control systems) Feedback in which a portion of the output of a circuit, device, or machine is fed back 180° out of phase with the input signal, resulting in a decrease of amplification so as to stabilize the amplification with respect to time or frequency, and a reduction in distortion and noise.
