The discovery came through the application of a new technique called Suppression Subtractive Hybridisation at Dublin's Mater Hospital Diabetic Nephology Research Unit.
He was admitted to the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1987 and obtained his certificate of special competence in Nephology in 1989 from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
