networked DVRA digital video recorder (DVR) service that lets people save their digital TV programs on the cable provider's servers and retrieve them on demand. It eliminates the local DVR, such as a Tivo, PC DVR or cable box with built-in DVR, the latter typically very low-cost equipment. The concept was introduced in the 2004-2005 time frame, but was tangled up in the courts until 2008. The fast forward control may be disabled during playback of recorded commercials. See DVR.
