Entomology professor Walter Leal and postdoctoral researcher Zain Syed, UC Davis Department of Entomology, found that nonanal (pronounced "no-nan-al") is the powerful semiochemical that triggers the mosquitoes' keen sense of smell, directing them toward a blood meal.
Except for t,t,-2,4-decadienal, of the 19 identified volatiles, the levels of hexanal and nonanal in the chips stored under light were greater than those of chips stored in the dark.
Materials and methods Substances Hexanal (98%), nonanal (95%), (E)-2-hexenal ([greater than or equal to]98%), (E)-2-heptenal (97%), (E)-2-octenal (94%) and (E)-2-nonenal (97%) were obtained from Aldrich (Milan, Italy).
