nyala: see bushbuck bushbuck, small, delicate, spiral-horned antelope, Tragelaphus scriptus, of tropical Africa. Bushbucks live in pairs in thick forest, browsing on leaves and shrubs by night and resting during the day. Their chief predator is the leopard.

nyala

Slender antelope (Tragelaphus angasi) of South Africa having a crest of hair along the back from head to tail and standing 3.5 ft (110 cm). The male, which has loosely spiraled horns and a long fringe on the throat and underparts, is dark brown with reddish brown on the lower legs, white on the face and neck, and vertical white stripes on the body. The female is reddish brown with more conspicuous striping. Nyalas live alone or in small groups in forests. The rare mountain nyala (T. buxtoni) of central Ethiopia is grayish brown.

June 11, 2009 (EL-FASHER) -- The joint UN and African Union mission in Darfur says one of its peacekeepers died during a road traffic accident in the South Darfur capital of Nyala yesterday while on official duty.
Another UNAMID peacekeeper was killed in Nyala when his patrol was ambushed in March.
