Greenstein grades the personal skills and quirks of our last 12 presidents on a sliding scale of solipsism, attributing high and low marks based on how the chief executive applies, conceals, obfuscates, emphasizes and controls personal "qualities. Anyone who's seen a cop show or movie has a pretty good grasp on the conceit that local police and the FBI just don't get along, that both sides get testy and defensive when a territorial dispute obfuscates separate investigations that happen to intersect. Refreshingly, however, her familiarity with these critics' idiosyncratic stances never obfuscates the descriptive and exploratory concerns of the book, and consistently militates for the elucidation of the Renaissance texts at hand. |
