The section on Venetian palaces, in addition to a traditional tracking of specific architectural motifs such as ogee arches and mibrab windows, moves beyond the normal scope of art history to consider how such borrowings were perceived by a Venetian audience as signifiers of eastern experiences and social place. Results of that thinking can be seen all over the world in fibreglass ogee arches, fake columns, false domes and absurd pilasters glued over standard international sheds devoted to the most utilitarian kinds of people-movement. A huge project in the Middle East takes its cue from waves and dhows: at least there are no ogee arches. |
