oidium [ō′id·ē·əm]
(mycology) One of the small, thin-walled spores with flat ends produced by autofragmentation of the vegetative hyphae in certain Eumycetes. Oidium a small cell into which the hypha of the mycelium of certain imperfect and club fungi disintegrates. The oidium functions as a spore for vegetative reproduction. In heterothallic club fungi, the oidium performs the function of a spermatium in diploidization of the mycelium. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
