Pit

An indentation in an optical medium such as a CD-ROM or DVD. The laser beam is either absorbed in the pit or reflects off the non-indented areas, which are called "lands." Using various algorithms, the reflections are converted into 0 and 1 bits.

In this case, the additional olfactory pit that formed was clearly smaller than the normal olfactory pits.
By its nose: Water flows in through one of two olfactory pits (nostrils not connected to the throat) and flows out the other.
Who would have thought that such a delightful treasure trove of a book could have resulted from plumbing the depths of understanding of the olfactory pits inside the nose--once thought to be vestigial organs?
