umiak, oomiak
a large open boat made of stretched skins, used by Inuit Umiak a large Eskimo cargo boat with an open top. The umiak is 8 to 9 m long, 1.5 m wide, and up to 70 cm deep. The boat is equipped with a pair of oars and a sail; its wooden frame is covered with sealskins. The umiak is called the women’s boat because, in contrast to the kayak, the rowers are always women. Normally a man steers, using a fan-shaped paddle. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
