open architecture

A system in which the specifications are made public in order to encourage third-party vendors to develop add-on products. Much of Apple's early success was due to the Apple II's open architecture, which is also called an "open system." The PC is the prime example of an open architecture. See open system.

A computer architecture whose specifications are made widely available to allow third parties to develop add-on peripherals for it.
