Ordos (ôr`dōs), Mandarin Erdesi, sandy desert plateau region, c.35,000 sq mi (90,650 sq km), Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, N China; almost encircled by the great northern bend of the Huang He. The Great Wall of China Great Wall of China, fortifications, c.1,500 mi (2,400 km) long, winding across N China from Gansu prov. to Hebei prov. on the Yellow Sea. The wall, running mostly along the southern edge of the Mongolian plain, was erected to protect China from northern nomads.

 separates the Ordos from the fertile loess land to the south and east. The desert receives less than 10 in. (25 cm) of rain annually, mainly in the form of thunderstorms. The region has many salt lakes and intermittent streams. Large soda deposits are mined. The alkaline soil supports some grasslands, and nomadic Mongol herders raise sheep and goats; some oasis-farming is also practiced.

Aalam Ordo lies on the shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, near the village of Kaji-Sai, Issyk-Kul oblast.
Comparing common worship with the Ordo (rubrics established by tradition as liturgical norms), he concludes that contemporary worshippers are often indifferent to traditional structures for worship.
He is pitted against the shadowy Ordo Novus who has already assassinated two priests in Doyle's diocese, a gay Jesuit pastor and a liberation theologian and is gunning for Doyle himself.
