overvoltage [¦ō·vər¦vōl·tij] (electricity) A voltage greater than that at which a device or circuit is designed to operate. Also known as overpotential. (electronics) The amount by which the applied voltage exceeds the Geiger threshold in a radiation counter tube. (physical chemistry) The difference between electrode potential under electrolysis conditions and the thermodynamic value of the electrode potential in the absence of electrolysis for the same experimental conditions.
