the amount of oxygen that can be bound by the blood when completely saturated, expressed in volume percent. The blood’s oxygen capacity depends on its hemoglobin concentration. A determination of oxygen capacity is important in characterizing the blood’s respiratory function. The oxygen capacity of human blood is about 18–20 volume percent.
