(geochemistry)
The difference between the actual amount of dissolved oxygen in lake or sea water and the saturation concentration at the temperature of the water mass sampled.

I submit that rather than simply developing an oxygen deficit as a consequence of intense body movement, the build-up of carbon dioxide (CO2) from increased metabolism is the main cause of the sometimes nearly paralyzing symptoms of breathlessness.
This phenomenon is known as oxygen deficit, during which both the ATP/PCr and anaerobic glycolysis energy systems contribute ATP.
