1. Anatomy
a. either of the two fleshy folds surrounding the mouth, playing an important role in the production of speech sounds, retaining food in the mouth, etc.
b. (as modifier): lip salve
2. the corresponding part in animals, esp mammals
3. a nontechnical word for labium and labellum (sense 1)
4. the embouchure and control in the lips needed to blow wind and brass instruments

A fleshy fold above and below the entrance to the mouth of mammals.

A parapet placed on the downstream margin of a millrace or apron in order to minimize scouring of the river bottom.
