paraphysis [pə′raf·ə·səs]
(botany) A sterile filament borne among the sporogenous or gametogenous organs in many cryptogams. (vertebrate zoology) A median evagination of the roof of the telencephalon of some lower vertebrates. Paraphysis one of the multicellular filaments or single cells borne among the gametogenous or sporogenous organs of certain brown algae, most basidiomycetous and ascomycetous fungi, and mosses.
