As it pertains to helicopters, it is the power required to overcome the drag of the fuselage when the helicopter is in straight and level flight. The value of parasite power is zero when the helicopter is in the still-air hover, and its value increases as the speed increases. The value of the drag increases with the square of the rate of the increase in speed while the parasite power increases by a factor of 8.
